Four more cases of Coronavirus have been reported in Ghana, Pex News can confirm, bringing the total to six cases reported in the country so far.
Briefing the press on Sunday, 15th March 2020 to update citizens on the outbreak of the Novel 2019 (COVID-19) in the country, the government said three of the cases were recorded in Accra whilst the other was recorded in the Ashanti Region.
The Director of Public Health at the Ghana Health Service (GHS), Dr. Badu Sarkodie who provided updates on the country’s cases said that the new cases were also imported into the country, revealing that two of the cases were confirmed on 13th of March 2020 while the other two were confirmed on 14th March, 2020.
Cases of 13th March 2020
On Friday, 13th March, 2020 two more cases were initially confirmed as COVID-19. They reported from the Ashanti Region and the Greater Accra Region.
Dr. Sarkodie disclosed that,:“The first is a 56-year old man, a Ghanaian who returned from a trip in the UK on the 4th of March. He stayed in UK for 10 days and came back. He developed symptoms on the 12th of March and reported to a hospital in Obuasi. The case definition met that of suspected COVID-19. Samples were taken and sent to the Kumasi Centre for Collaborative Research in Tropical Medicine (KCCR) and within a short time, the lab reported that this is another confirmed case of COVID-19 within the country.”
“The second is a woman, a Ghanaian student. She travelled out to the USA. Stayed there for about 10 days. She came back on the 9th of March and on 13th of March, started having symptoms…Samples were sent to Noguchi on 13th and the same day we had a report from Noguchi that confirmed this as another case of COVID-19.”
Both patients have since been isolated and are being treated.
Cases of 14th March 2020
Dr. Sarkodie announced that the two additional cases were of two Ghanaian men aged 41 and 42 who had travelled into the country this very month.
Contacts so far
Dr. Badu Sarkodie further revealed that total number of 151 contacts have so far been traced to four individuals who have been confirmed with the novel coronavirus in Ghana.
Background
In November 2019, China recorded it's first case of Corona virus. Consequently killing most of the infected people. Since then, Corona virus has been declared as a pandemic by the World Health Organisation (WHO), advising countries to take precautionary measures to tackle the issue.The virus, which is now a pandemic, has infected at least 128,343 people across the world and killed 4,702 with 68,324 people reported to have recovered after contracting the virus.
About 81,000 of the cases occurred in China alone, particularly in the province of Hubei.
Other countries in Asia, Europe and the USA have recorded several cases of this virus with the US declaring a sate of emergency as well as halting all flights from Europe to USA as a preventive measure.
Common signs of infection
According to the WHO, common signs of infection of the corona virus include respiratory infection symptoms, fever, cough, shortness of breath and breathing difficulties. In more severe cases, the infection can cause pneumonia, severe acute respiratory syndrome, kidney failure and even death.
Prevention
WHO's standard recommendations to prevent infection include regular hand washing with soap under running tap water , covering mouth and nose when coughing and sneezing, thoroughly cooking meat and eggs. Avoid close contact with anyone showing symptoms of respiratory illness such as coughing and sneezing.
