WHY FEW GHANAIAN WOMEN GO GLOBAL

Author: Glory J. Boateng

8th March, 2020 was dedicated to celebrating women globally. This year’s celebration had the theme being aligned with UN Women’s new campaign, "Generation Equality." In Africa and especially Ghana, it was not much of a hullabaloo as the day fortunately or unfortunately fell on a Sunday - a reserved religious day and resting day for others.

But as a Global citizen, I got myself thinking about why there aren’t a lot of Global Women coming from this side of the continent, Ghana ðŸ‡¬ðŸ‡. I took my phone and began to surf for global Ghanaian Women. And sadly, I couldn’t find a lot, not to even calculate the percentage of my findings.
But I’d still use this opportunity to commend women making global impacts like, Lucy Quist, Ghana’s first Female CEO of a telco, former Airtel and former vice chair of Fifa’s normalization committee.
Charlotte Kesson-Smith Osei, who is UN International Elections Commissioner, and Ghana’s first Female and Former Electoral Commissioner. You might be wondering why I mentioned just these two. These are some of the two people whose position affected decision making at the global level.
Challote Osei

I would also want to appreciate extraordinary women like Gloria Akuffo, who is Ghana’s current Attorney General and Minister for Justice. She led the team of lawyers at the International Tribunal for the law of the Sea ITLOS in hamburg, Germany to uphold Ghana’s Position on the maritime boundary dispute between Ghana and Cote d’ivoire. Which Ghana eventally won.

I am also sure there are other women making global impacts. But my question is, how many are they?
And why are we not able to go Global easily?
I'm scared it would only continue to get worst if something radically good and progressive doesn’t happen. Can we talk about some of the women who dare to climb global or better still make global changes go through as they start in Ghana.
Initially, the most popular factor or reason was our culture, which tend to favor men the more. Our joy was that education or literacy could half way solve this. Unfortunately these beliefs creeped into the mindset of both men and even majority of our women. One of the popular sayings were “women are their own enemies”.
Religiously, statement like “women are the weaker vessels” were taken to even the board room. Hence, positions like secretary were given to women at the boardroom meeting. Some of them even brought the scripture in the Bible, “women submit to your husbands” to the work place, even when the women there were their colleagues or even bosses. Some men claim for submission at our offices even when they are not our husbands. Obviously abusing the Good Word of God.
When a woman makes a contribution, she’s termed emotional.
Some say we should focus more on our bodies. No wonder we have more women even pursuing makeup artististry after their first degree.
I have practically met too many men at the work place who always doubt my competence. Some of them can even accuse you of sleeping with the boss, when you’re promoted.
In our culture and systems, it is believed that all the woman can do is follow and not lead. So just a few women hold management positions in some of Ghana’s leading companies.
The issue of marriage is another reason why some women don’t even want to fight to get to the global map of influence. I remember my lovely uncle advicing me to hide my portfolio from men so that I can get them to propose to me. As funny as that may sound, it is the reality on the ground. Ambitious women sometimes have to compromise with their dreams so that they can be easily noticed as quite, calm and reserved by a potential partner.
Well, in the coming years, I hope to see more women from Ghana being globally celebrated. And oh, I will be one!..

Happy post International Women’s Day to all women. Cheers to our dreams.

DON'T MARRY WOMEN WITH EGO - ICGC Pastor Advices.

The Head Pastor of the ICGC Faith & Miracle Temple, Teshie Camp 2 Assembly, Rev. Samuel Nyarko, has advised men not to marry women with ego. Continuing from a teaching series he began earlier this year on the theme, "How to Make 2020 a Successful Year", Rev. Nyarko, during one of his evening Teaching Services on Tuesday, February 11, 2020, reiterated that, women with ego are trouble causers and would endanger the lives of men who married them.  "If you want to have a peaceful marriage then don't marry a woman with ego. She will drive you earlier into your grave". He added that "People who are egoistic are not ready to change and will always give you problems."  He, therefore, advised men to choose their life partners wisely. Teaching on why people don't grow, Rev. Nyarko established the points that indiscipline, loose life, wrong associations, wrong life partners, pride, arrogance, ignorance, unseriousness about life and its rewarding systems...

Coronavirus and easter

Over the past weeks, the world has been hit by a catastrophic disease which was subsequently declared a pandemic by the World Health Organisation  (WHO). Yeah, I am referring to the coronavirus disease  (COVID-19) - a tiny yet dangerous virus that has brought great and mighty nations to their knees. Thousands of lives are recorded dead and people everywhere are panicking and wondering when all these would finally be over. When are things going to be normal again they ask. When are our children returning to school and when would the world's economy be stable again? Thousands of workers have lost their jobs globally. Social gatherings including religious organisations have been suspended. But as we are in the Easter week,  I ask of the impact of COVID-19 on its celebration.  Easter Easter celebrations varies from year to year. It is usually celebrated on the first Sunday after the full moon on or after 21st March. This year, Easter Sunday fall...

Coronavirus: Government of Ghana to spend GHS 1 Billion on electricity reliefs

The government will spend a little over GHS 1 billion over the next three months on relief for electricity consumers amid the economic slowdown from the novel coronavirus pandemic.  About 87 percent of the Ghanaian population on 4.8 million metres who have access to the national grid are in line to benefit from these reliefs, according to the Energy Minister, Peter Amewu. The government is fully absorbing electricity bills for lifeline consumers; persons who consume 0 to 50 kilowatt-hours per month. The other categories of consumers will enjoy a 50 percent discount within the same period. Addressing a press conference on Thursday morning, Mr. Amewu gave a breakdown of the reliefs with the Electricity of Ghana (ECG) accounting for most of the beneficiaries. ECG currently oversees one million metres for its lifeline customers, which amounts to 27.4 percent of its customers.  “This means that at the current tariff level, Government is absolving almost an amount of G...

The Secret I Kept In My Marriage

My husband and I have been married for over two decades. We have a son and he's our only son. But he's not my husband's.I know you might be wondering how or you might be calling me names but wait till you hear my story. source: nation.com I met Isaac Buxton at a UNICEF program in Geneva, Switzerland. He was representing his institution and I was also representing mine. He was sitting next to me and he was really charming  and adorable. He was six feet tall, with his immaculate suit and a cute spectacle on.  Before I had come from Ghana to the Switzerland, I had in mind to never leave the same - I wanted to get hooked. I was fed up with the single life. "How can a beautiful, fair and a gorgeous looking lady like me never get a boyfriend left alone a husband. This is surely gonna be my time," I kept saying to myself. I just couldn't wait to see myself hooked up with a foreign diplomat. I was imagining how my children would look ...
