H.E. President Nana Akufo-Addo has ordered for the closure of all schools and universities in the country as his government seeks to control and curtail the spread of the coronavirus pandemic.
After health authorities disclosing four more confirmed cases of the disease earlier on Sunday afternoon, the President in a televised address that same Sunday evening, ordered for the closure of all educational institutions with effect from Monday, March 16, 2020 including the suspension of all public gatherings such as conferences, workshops, sporting events and funerals. He, however, permitted private funerals of not more than twenty-five (25) people in attendance.
Although the educational institutions are being closed, pre-tertiary students who have already registered for the basic and secondary school exams will be attending revision classes asking school authorities to ensure that these classes are well conducted in hygienic conditions with appropriate "social distancing" between allattendees.
The president further advised citizens to co-operate with the health authorities to help curb "community spreading."
"Let us all put our shoulders to the wheel," the president said, adding that "I am confident that together we shall overcome this challenge."
The President further said that:"We are determined to do whatever we can to prevent the spread of the virus and protect the population. All the measures that have been announced will be subject to constant review and enhancement if necessary."
